In 1918, at 11.00am on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month – the First World War came to an end. Most of the war was fought in dug-out trenches across Belgium and France. Perhaps as many as 9 million soldiers died, there were about 27 million were wounded – many permanently disabled. Then at 11.00am, the fighting stopped everywhere, six hours after the Armistice was signed in a railway carriage in Compiègne, northern France. There are lots of exciting new things happening at West Peckham church, but the noticeboard has always been a little tucked away (and hard to see from the path running past the church). So we have moved the noticeboard so that it is easy to see as you walk past the church. You will also be able to see that it is now being regularly updated – there are the times of church services, contact details and forthcoming events. Arriving for the family service this morning at West Peckham church you can definitely feel that Autumn in the air. It is bright and clear but colder and the shadows cast by sun are much longer. By Autumn is one of my favourite times of the year in West Peckham. We have the Bonfire night approaching (which usually sees a big fire and a big crowd on the villange Green) and the preparations for Christmas are all starting up. And there is the local Kent beer and a warm log fire in the Swan for those dark nights… What do you like most about Autumn?
