Comfort and Bereavement Service at West Peckham

Each year we hold a Comfort and Bereavement Service for our parish. This is a special service aimed at anyone who has lost someone in the few years. It is a chance to reflect, remember and pray. You do not need to be a regular church-goer or even religious to attend – everyone is welcome. This year we are very pleased that Jennifer Rees Larcombe has agreed to do a talk at our service. Jennifer may be a familiar face to many as she also regularly visits West Peckham church on her walks through the area. Jennifer is an author, international speaker, a trained bereavement counsellor and has recently opened up her … Continue reading

What are you watching on Saturday night?

On saturday night, a major new television series starts on Channel 5 called ‘The Bible’ at 9pm. Over the next 5 weeks, it will bring to life major stories from the Old and New Testament. Christians believe the Bible is the word of God and that it is packed with help and advice on how to live your life. The Bible is also a History of the Jews and the early Christian Church so it is packed with stories. All human experience is in there – life, dead, love, friendship, loyalty, betrayal, murder…. It should certainly make gripping television! So if you want to learn more about the Bible in … Continue reading

What do anniversaries mean to you?

Today is a big anniversary and the news channels will be full of images to remind us of the tragic events in Dallas 50 years ago…. Anniversaries are very important to people, even if they celebrate events which took place long ago. 2 weeks ago we celebrated Remembrance Sunday at St. Lawrence’s church (Mereworth) and this event has become more (not less important) in recent years despite the passing of the last few survivors who actually remember the 1918 Armistice in recent years. We are about to enter the Christmas season where Christians remember the most important anniversary in History – the day when God choose to join us here … Continue reading

Christingle service lights up St Dunstan’s church

This afternoon was the West Peckham Christingle service at St. Dunstan’s church. Here are some pictures if you were  unlucky enough to miss the service. There is still a Christmas Day service tomorrow at 10am if you would like to make a West Peckham service part of your Christmas. It was fantastic to see the church lit up and to be able to raise money for the children’s service.

Remembrance service at Merworth

On sunday, we held our joint memorial service at Mereworth church – which was very full with people from not only Mereworth but also West Peckham and Kings Hill. Many local people have fought and died in the First World War or later Wars, and West Malling was a critical RAF airbase in the battle of Britain. So there are lots of local connections to remind us. The idea of remembering all the victims of war on the Sunday closest to 11th November (the day that World War One ended at 11am) can seem remote to many people. So we were lucky enough to have several local people who are … Continue reading

Remembrance service for Mereworth and West Peckham

In 1918, at 11.00am on  the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month – the First World War came to an end. Most of the war was fought in dug-out trenches across Belgium and France. Perhaps as many as 9 million soldiers died, there were about 27 million were wounded – many permanently disabled. Then at 11.00am, the fighting stopped everywhere, six hours after the Armistice was signed in a railway carriage in Compiègne, northern France. The Joint remembrance service for Mereworth and West Peckham will take place at St Lawrence’s Church, Mereworth, on Sunday 11 November 2012 starting at 10am, and finishing with the 2 minutes … Continue reading
